The Hospital

The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) provides secondary and tertiary care to children and young people across the northern and western suburbs; specialist paediatric healthcare to the children of Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and parts of South Australia; and is the designated statewide provider of services including paediatric trauma, rehabilitation and forensic medicine. As a quarternary centre for complex cardiac surgery and organ transplantation, the RCH cares for the sickest children from around Australia. The hospital employs 5,000 staff and has an annual budget of $620million. It moved to a new, multi-award winning building at 50 Flemington Rd, Parkville.


The Department

The RCH Immunology Laboratory provides an integrated laboratory and clinical service for the diagnosis of immunodeficiency, autoimmune and allergic disorders. The laboratory performs a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests, in particular specialised testing for primary immunodeficiency diseases e.g. immunophenotyping, cell function testing, measurement of serotype-specific IgG responses to pneumococcal vaccines. The laboratory receives an increasing number of samples from Victorian and interstate laboratories, referred for an increasing range of complex assays not available in other diagnostic laboratories in Australasia.


The Role

We are seeking applications from a qualified and experienced senior scientist who will be responsible for the smooth operation of the immunology department, demonstrating appropriate supervisory, interpersonal and organisational skills. The main elements of this role are:

  • Co-ordination and active participation in the diagnostic service

  • Management of laboratory and administrative duties within the department

  • Technical supervision of laboratory staff

  • Development, evaluation and implementation of new methodologies

  • Monitoring quality of scientific output

  • Liaison with clinical staff
