Flow Cytometry Supervisor


The Flow cytometry supervisor at Children's Heathcare of Atlanta provides oversight for a low volume clinical pediatric Flow Cytometry laboratory with <5 personnel and assists in managing the operational aspects of the department and is accountable for day to day patient testing activities within the laboratory. The Flow laboratory provides testing for high acuity patients within the two campus system.   The supervisor partners with other department leaders and clinical staff to ensure that needs are met to deliver seamless patient care.  Our test menu currently includes leukemia/lymphoma, minimal residual disease for B lymphoblastic leukemia (COG approved), lymphocyte subset analysis, CD45RA/RO naïve/memory enumeration, and CD34 enumeration.  We are looking to grow in areas of specialized Immunology testing.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related field or has met the minimal education and experience requirements as outlined by a nationally recognized Medical Technology certifying body

Four (4) years full time experience as a medical technologist in a clinical Flow Cytometry laboratory

Current certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent)

Eligible for supervisor certification by the Georgia Department of Human Resources

Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

Thorough knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling

Considerable knowledge of Flow Cytometry laboratory equipment, terminology and standards.

Preferred qualifications:

SCYMCM certification

Gating experience highly preferred

Supervisory experience

Experience with BD platform or willingness to attend training

Knowledge of Immunology testing

Primary Job Duties:

Provides supervision of the Flow Cytometry Laboratory operations- 40%

Provides supervision of personnel

Maintains schedule

Assist with inventory management

Completes performance reviews for personnel

Acts as a liaison between the Flow technologists and Section Director

Reviews & revises policies, procedures, and forms

Updates the CAP test menu when appropriate

Leads weekly departmental huddles

Monitors workflows and helps coordinate testing to meet patient care needs

Communicates with vendors regarding instrument PMs, service, and repairs

Other duties as assigned

Oversees Quality in the Flow Cytometry Laboratory : 25%

Completes monthly quality scorecard

Reviews quality control after the lead techs

Reviews proficiency testing failures, and facilitates investigations and write-ups.

Continually seeks process improvement

Reviews QAs submitted

Reviews ONSs, and completes documentation regarding investigation & correction action

Performs quality audits to ensure regulatory compliance

Has solid understanding of Flow Cytometry CAP checklist requirements and evidence for compliance

Oversees the development of new tests – Assay Development -  15%

Provides oversight of lead techs in regards to assay development

May perform research regarding new testing

Assists with the development & documentation of validation protocols for section director approval

Serves as the point-of-contact throughout implementation

Completes new test request forms for Lab IT department

Submits billing information

Performs bench work-10%

Will perform bench work & patient testing and maintain technical competency in all testing performed in the Flow laboratory

Process Improvement– 5%

Continually assesses operations to implement improvements in order to gain efficiency, and improve quality

Facilitates the validation of new  instruments to be used in the Flow Cytometry Laboratory – 5%

Willingness to gain an understanding of Immunology & testing that CHOA might consider beneficial to in-source.
