Job Summary

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is seeking a Technical Director of Research and Development who will be responsible for overseeing the technical and scientific development of novel clinical tests in the Clinical Immunology Lab in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.  The director is expected to interface with Pathology staff, clinicians and scientists in identifying and investigating new test requests. The Technical Director will work closely with lab leaders to identify new clinical tests to develop, and pioneer new diagnostic tests and innovative methodologies in collaboration with clinicians and clinician scientists. Opportunities include publication of new assays/methodologies, collaborations with other experts in the field and outreach programs, application for assay development and translational grants and learning new and upcoming technologies. The Technical Director will work with the Medical Director, Lab Manager, Lab Supervisor, and laboratory staff to implement new assay design, discovery, clinical validations, and implementation into the laboratory according to laboratory guidelines.  The Technical Director will evaluate, improve, and update existing assays in accordance with regulatory guidelines (CAP, CLIA). The director will supervise research and development technologists and provide technical leadership and troubleshooting of technical issues.  

 

Qualified candidates should hold a PhD, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Medical Laboratory Immunology is preferred. The Technical Director of Research and Development should demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills in all pertinent lab processes, understand compliance with all regulations of accrediting/licensing agencies, effectively communicate ideas and have excellent oral and written communication skills.  Expectations also include the identification of growth opportunities within the Research and Development team and management of multiple projects and individuals therein.  The ideal candidate should have experience in flow cytometry and other immunology methodologies such as ELISA, IFA, and tissue culture.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Terminal degree

Required Experience: Five (5) years of specialized experience in area of expertise.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Experience: 

  • Twelve (12) years of specialized experience in area of expertise.
  • Seven (7) years of leadership, management or supervisory experience.

To carry out its mission, it is of critical importance for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to keep our patients, families and workforce safe and healthy and to support the health of our global community. In keeping with this, CHOP has mandated all workforce members on site at any CHOP location for any portion of their time be vaccinated for COVID-19 as a condition of employment.  This mandate also applies to workforce members performing work for CHOP at non-CHOP locations. Additionally, all workforce members based in or regularly scheduled to work at any New Jersey location are mandated to be both vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19, with booster timing consistent with applicable guidelines. The CHOP COVID-19 vaccine mandate is in alignment with applicable local, state and federal mandates. CHOP also requires all workforce members who work in patient care buildings or who provide patient care to receive an annual influenza vaccine. Employees may request exemption consideration for CHOP vaccine requirements for valid religious and medical reasons.  Please note start dates may be delayed until candidates are fully immunized or valid exemption requests are reviewed. In addition, candidates other than those in positions with regularly scheduled hours in New Jersey, must attest to not using tobacco products.
