Hematopathologist, Flow Cytometry Section, Laboratory of Pathology, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland

The Laboratory of Pathology of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD, is recruiting a hematopathologist with expertise in flow cytometry. This position represents an exciting opportunity for an individual with interests and expertise in the application of cutting-edge multiparametric flow cytometry in diagnostic pathology. This position consists of clinical, educational and research activities and is ideal for individuals interested in an academic pathology career. At the clinical level, the incumbent will sign out flow cytometry tests of patients being treated on or being evaluated for entry into clinical trials at the NCI. At the educational level, the incumbent will instruct and mentor pathology residents and fellows training in the Laboratory of Pathology. At the research level, the incumbent will participate in flow cytometry projects including development of novel assays and be involved in collaborative research with clinical investigators. There is dedicated time to develop research interests. The Flow Cytometry Section also operates a basic research core and the incumbent is free to participate at any level desired. However, collaborative involvement in clinical protocols is equally valued.

The clinical flow cytometry laboratory consists of 3 Hematopathologists, 5 technologists and 3 postbaccalaureate fellows who interact frequently on a daily basis and are a close-knit group.  We take pride in our diversity and in fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.  The position offers a unique opportunity for an academic hematopathologist to reach their potential in a supportive work environment.

The qualified candidate should possess either a MD or MD/PhD degree and should have board certification in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology, and board certification in Hematopathology. Although experience in flow cytometry is desirable, graduating hematopathology fellows with talent and interest in flow cytometry and candidates at early-mid levels of experience are welcome to apply for this staff clinician position. The ideal candidate will possess talent and/or experience in performing flow cytometry analysis and diagnostic interpretation of hematolymphoid specimens, as well as strong interpersonal skills.   Candidates will be evaluated on their educational background, scholarly work, mentoring activities, and experience, and appointments will be made as a staff clinician at a commensurate level ranging from assistant research physician to senior research physician. Salary will also be commensurate with experience.
