About the Role

We are seeking a full-time Registered Medical Scientist to join the Flow Cytometry section. This position is 40 hours per week Monday - Friday, however after a period of training you will be expected to participate in the on-call roster in the evenings and weekends.

The flow cytometry section provides a comprehensive quality flow cytometry service for malignancy diagnosis and disease monitoring to the greater Wellington region. The majority of our work involves leukaemia and lymphoma diagnosis in partnership with our Haematologists, Immunopathologists and Anatomical Pathologists, averaging 120 complex cases a month. In addition, we provide CD34 analysis support to the Wellington Regional Blood and Cancer Stem Cell Transplant service. We are also developing immunological assays to assist in the diagnosis of primary immunodeficiency.

Samples processed include peripheral blood, bone marrow, CSF, FNAs, tissues and other body fluids. The role is supported by both haematologists and immunopathologists who are experts in flow cytometry.

The flow cytometry laboratory is equipped with a Beckman Coulter Navios EX flow cytometer utilizing Kaluza software for analysis. Most immunophenotyping panels use state-of-the-art 10-colour multiparameter flow cytometry utilizing dry-tube technology.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who has the potential and an appetite to reach a senior technical level in Flow cytometry analysis in a supported environment. The future may hold advancement opportunities, including leading the section in the analysis and reporting of Flow cytometry, including developing new assays.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to consolidate and further develop existing skills and knowledge. There is also the opportunity to make a difference to patient care through your contribution to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease.

To succeed in this role you will need:

  • To be a Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand registered Scientist or a transferable qualification that allows applicants to gain full NZ registration.
  • A current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) or able to attain APC.
  • Demonstrated competency and in-depth knowledge of flow cytometry. Demonstrated skills in sample preparation, instrument maintenance and optimisation, quality control, compensation, gating strategies, troubleshooting and reporting.
  • A strong haematology background with a particular focus on haematology malignancy and morphology.
  • Be able to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedural guidelines.
  • Solid analytic and problem-solving skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with good record-keeping skills.
  • A sound knowledge of laboratory operations including; safety, operation of equipment and the ability to follow procedures and instructions.
  • Must be prepared to share knowledge and participate in regular departmental education sessions.
  • Have a team focus with initiative, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and possess the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
