Lab Manager, Flow Cytometry and Cellular Immunology

The Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute Clinical Laboratories at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital are seeking a Laboratory Manager to oversee the operations of its flow cytometry and cellular immunology labs. The CBDI Clinical Labs offer unique clinical testing related to the diagnosis, evaluation, and monitoring of immunologic, oncologic, and hematologic disorders.

This is a leadership position with duties including personnel management, operational oversight, project management, quality/compliance, and financial functions. The Lab Manager plays a key role in establishing and implementing laboratory goals, effecting process improvements and will participate in broader clinical laboratory initiatives.

The individual must have an optimistic disposition, possess excellent communication skills, work well in a team setting, and be comfortable leading laboratory staff. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead an organization is required. The individual will report to the Director of Lab Operations, and work closely with the section Medical Directors, and the Research and Development Team. Flow cytometry technical expertise and laboratory management experience is preferred.

Expected Starting Salary Range: $87,713.60 - 112,000

Fulltime 40 hours per week

SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Provide managerial oversight for the flow cytometry and cellular immunology subsections of the CBDI Clinical Laboratories. To include responsibilities in personnel management (~25 FTE), operational oversight, project implementation, compliance and financial management. Preferred experience: laboratory management, flow cytometry. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

·Lab Operations
Contributes to the effective management of the clinical laboratories. Establishes and meets annual goals that are developed to assist the Laboratory in achieving its mission and vision. Supports innovation through new test development and implementation of new testing platforms. Attends and actively participates in assigned department and/or hospital committees. Interacts effectively with superiors, subordinates and peers to accomplish department goals. Manage and provide technical assistance for compliance with above plans. Accepts and completes special assignments relating to general laboratory management and administration as required. Recommends approaches for improvement activities and implements new processes. Collects and measures data, develop processes based on performance and communicate results. Assists in the planning, design, measurement, assessment and improvement of clinical laboratory services.

·Regulatory & Compliance
Maintains compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulatory requirements, such as CAP, TJC, HIPAA, CMS and/or other accreditation standards. Design and/or implement programs policies, and/or procedures to ensure compliance. Track laws and regulations that might affect policies and procedures. May prepare compliance reports and communicate results as necessary. Understand and comply to applicable policies, guidelines, regulations, and/or accreditation standards.

·Performance Development
Participate in the development and monitoring of an effective staffing and retention strategy. Partner with department leadership to ensure effective performance management of direct reports; establish and maintain procedures for orientation of new employees; mentor and provide learning and development opportunities for direct reports; collaborate with human resources business partners and department leadership to meet the division's talent management goals; support organizational programs that impact employees and ensure communication, comprehension and adherence to all human resources policies and related legal and/or compliance requirements.

·Quality Assurance
Manage the quality of testing processes within the laboratory section through audits and monitors indicative of high quality processes and systems. Identifies and leads improvement activities within and across laboratory disciplines.

·Financial Management
Assist with fiscal responsibilities of the department as requested. Monitor budget expenditures, identify and research variances or problems. Assist in monitoring revenue and expenses. Research information for major purchases. May assist with annual budget preparation.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 5+ years of work experience in a related job discipline
  • Certification by national laboratory accrediting agency

Preferred:

  • Experience with flow cytometry and cellular immunology
  • 2-3 years of demonstrated leadership experience in a clinical laboratory setting
