Medical Lab Technician - Flow Cytometry

Job Summary

The flow cytometry medical lab technician will carry out a variety of low to high complexity laboratory tasks including all sample processing, triage and collate all patient history, receive and place all inventory, daily reagents, filing, pipette and stain appropriate antibody panel for respective sample, viability testing and preparation/staining of bone marrow and peripheral blood smears. In addition, the MLT should demonstrate knowledge and application of laboratory policies, procedures, and programs and a commitment to continuous learning.

Major Responsibilities

  • Carry out a variety of moderate to complex techniques including sample processing, pipetting, preparation of smears (BM, PB and FNA’s) and subsequent staining
  • Independently perform all steps involved in specimen processing, panel pipetting and incubation/washing for flow cytometric evaluation
  • Perform viability stain and count to determine proper cell concentration of processed samples
  • Multi-task with minimal margin of error
  • Help maintain detailed patient records/files of all tests/patients for tracking and follow-up
  • Maintain good communication skills thru email and shift log with co-workers and management
  • Maintain a well-stocked, clean and safe lab environment
  • Keep detailed equipment maintenance logs
  • Prepare all worksheets, tube labeling and data entry into Orchard
  • Patient collating and filing
  • Prepare flow reagents (RPMI, Lyse, Fix, etc.) when necessary
  • Multi-task with minimal margin of error
  • Share responsibilities for accurate inventory of supplies and antibodies with the team
  • Maintain Wright Geimsa Stainer and maintenance
  • Other duties as assigned

Work Schedule

Mon-Fri 4:00pm-12:00am with rotating weekend call

Requirements

  • Formal training as an MLT required
  • Associate Degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent education and training preferred
  • MLT or MT ASCP certification or equivalent preferred
  • Knowledge of sterile techniques, pipetting and smear preparation required
  • Flow Cytometry experience preferred but not required
  • Must have the ability to stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, twist and lift approximately 35 pounds
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must be an organized, detail-oriented team player
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
